Piano lessons with a modern approach
Hi, I'm James.
Hailing from Brooklyn, I began my journey with the piano at the age of four. My passion for music led me to Berklee College of Music, where I earned a scholarship to study piano performance and graduated early with summa cum laude honors.
Over the years, I’ve played alongside numerous bands and artists, gaining invaluable real-world experience as both a performer and music director. My work extends beyond performance to include composing, arranging, and music production, allowing me to explore the depth and range of music.
I’ve had the privilege of teaching over a hundred students of all ages, both freelance and at educational institutions. With expertise in modern music genres like jazz, pop, R&B, Latin, rock, blues, and more, I blend conservatory-level training with a fresh, non-classical approach. My teaching emphasizes creativity, musicality, and exploring contemporary styles that resonate with today’s musicians.
I believe music education should be as unique as the student. That’s why I tailor my curriculum to each individual’s goals, interests, and favorite genres, creating a personalized learning experience. In my lessons, I strive to foster a safe and encouraging space where students feel free to make mistakes, experiment, and grow into confident musicians.
Whether you're just starting out or refining your skills, I’m here to guide you on a rewarding musical journey that’s as inspiring as it is educational.
Ethos and Methodology
Every student is unique, and their goals shape the way we approach learning material. Together, we might explore traditional notation, playing by ear, or reading chord symbols and lead sheets, depending on what suits you best. I encourage students to pursue learning the style of music they most enjoy. I also give students the option to dive into composition, songwriting, improvisation, production, and arranging skills. To further enhance the experience, I integrate modern tools and technologies like play-along programs, music production software, notation programs, recording techniques, and digital piano sounds. These resources make lessons dynamic and engaging, keeping your learning both fun and practical.
Playing music is only part of the journey; understanding it is where real growth begins. I teach students the fundamental building blocks of music, from harmony and melody to rhythm and form. As you learn new pieces, you’ll also uncover the music theory behind them. This deeper understanding empowers you to apply these principles to other pieces, your own compositions, or improvisations, fostering creativity and independence in your musical journey.
Mistakes are not only okay—they’re encouraged. They often lead to new ideas and insights, and I work hard to create an environment where you feel safe to explore, experiment, and grow. My lessons are inclusive, welcoming students of all backgrounds, skill levels, musical tastes, and learning styles. Whether you’re just starting out or refining your skills, I’m committed to making your learning experience enjoyable, inspiring, and tailored to you.

What People Are Saying
"James is a fantastic piano teacher that I would recommend to anyone at any stage of their piano journey. I had no idea how to start playing the piano as an adult, with no prior training. After a few failed attempts at finding a teacher, I met James and it’s been the most amazing year. He has this incredible balance of being very patient while also knowing just when to push me to break through my limits. Every lesson feels tailored to me, and he always finds a way to keep things engaging and fun. Not to mention he’s extremely talented and him playing gets me really inspired to where I can eventually get to. I’ve seen so much improvement in my playing, and I’ve developed a real love for the piano. If you’re considering piano lessons, I can’t recommend James enough. He genuinely cares about helping his students succeed, and loves to teach. Highly recommend!"

"James is an incredible teacher! He immediately understands my goals and tailors each lesson to the songs I want to learn in a fun, productive way and gives me exercises I actually enjoy doing. I walk away from each lesson amazed with what I've learned and have improved so much more in just 2 months with him than I did in over a year of learning on my own. Highly recommend working with James!"
Varun D.
"I've had the pleasure of working with James who has transformed both my playing technique and composition skills. His deep musical knowledge shines through every lesson, offering insightful perspectives that have opened new creative pathways I hadn't considered before.
What truly sets him apart is his teaching approach. Rather than imposing rigid methods, he provides gentle guidance that allows my own musical voice to develop naturally. His patient demeanor creates a comfortable learning environment where mistakes become valuable learning opportunities rather than sources of frustration.
His thoughtful feedback consistently strikes the perfect balance—acknowledging progress while suggesting refinements that feel achievable. This encouraging style has built my confidence tremendously while still pushing me to grow.
The relaxed, easy-going atmosphere of our lessons makes even challenging concepts feel approachable. I leave each session feeling inspired rather than overwhelmed, with clear direction for practice and composition.
For anyone seeking a piano instructor who can nurture your musical development both with playing and composing while respecting your individual journey, I couldn't recommend him more highly."
